Winter Travel: Tips for the Traveler with Vision Loss

Wednesday, September 9 - 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Even though we are just approaching autumn, now is the time to start thinking and preparing for winter travel. Ice, snow, sleet, and rain complicate anyone’s travel plans no matter your vision. But for the traveler with vision loss, winter travel presents its own risks and challenges. You’ll want to make sure you are prepared before setting out.

Join Lauren Ross, Second Sense orientation and mobility intern, for this virtual winter preparedness workshop. You are sure to discover some important considerations you may not have thought of before!

Lauren will cover:

  • preparing for snow, ice, cold, and changing conditions
  • choosing winter clothing, footwear, and traction aids
  • building backup plans and knowing when another travel option makes sense
  • adapting long cane techniques and cane tips for snow
  • navigating snowbanks, obscured curbs, and changing street crossings
  • planning for public transit, paratransit, and rideshare delays or access issues

This workshop takes place on Zoom. To request the Zoom information, email Kathy Austin..
