Second Sense - Beyond Vision Loss

Let’s Create Some Art: Relief Sculpture

Thursday, April 9 - 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Feeling creative but think your vision loss will get in the way? Think again! This spring, Second Sense is offering two art classes led by Thomas McCue, one of our Passionate Focus artists. The goal of these workshops is to have some fun making art and to learn some tips, tricks, and techniques for making art on your own. Both workshops are open to anyone with any level of experience – no artistic ability required!

A little about Thomas McCue:
Thomas is an artist dedicated solely to his art practice following a long career in user experience design. His work, primarily abstract expressionist and landscape painting and drawing, has been exhibited in Chicago, Terre Haute, Baltimore, and elsewhere. Thomas has had low vision since 2001 due to a neurological condition, and has adapted both his digital design work and his hands-on art making techniques. Thomas has a Master’s in design from the Institute of Design at Illinois Institute of Technology and a Bachelor’s of Fine Art in painting and printmaking from Auburn University

Relief Sculpture – April 9

In this workshop, you’ll be hands-on in creating a relief sculpture. “Relief” is a flattened three-dimensional sculpture, often seen on the facades or walls of cathedrals or Greek temples. Participants will be able to create an “image” in 3D on a clay surface with their hands and tools, entirely using touch. Participants will learn how to plan their work through quick sketching, basic principles of composition, and use of tools to create form, texture, and value.

This workshop is limited to six people and held in person at Second Sense. Registration is required by calling 312-236-8569 or email email Kathy Austin.
