Second Sense - Beyond Vision Loss

Advanced Orientation and Mobility: A Deep Dive into Street Crossings

Saturday, July 11 - 10:00 am - 3:30 pm

Street crossings serve as one of the fundamental components of orientation and mobility. With the availability of audio pedestrian signals (APS) at some intersections and advancements in other technology, some elements of street crossings may have changed. While crossing the street may seem like a daunting and risky task, it can be broken down into several steps to make it more manageable.

These steps include:

  1. Locating your crossing
  2. Analyzing your intersection
  3. Aligning properly
  4. Using available audio pedestrian signals (APS)
  5. Crossing when it is safe

Many more details and techniques exist within the above steps that you can use at both familiar and unfamiliar intersections. A large part of this workshop focuses on the ability to generalize across all intersections rather than the intricate details of a specific one.

During this deep dive into street crossings, there will be a Q&A and a practical break-off to use the knowledge you have learned during the session. A brief intermission for lunch at Roanoke will be provided by Second Sense.

10:00 am: discussion begins at Second Sense
