“I am a native of the Philippines and migrated to the United States in 1968. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in nutrition from the Philippines and practiced my profession at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
I was born with poor vision and no medical doctor in my country was able to diagnose it. My eye condition was finally diagnosed as dry macular degeneration in 1971 at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. I became legally blind in the mid 1980s and eventually lost my color vision, too.
I signed up at the Lighthouse of Southwest Florida in 2016 for classes in independent living, mobility and technology. I also joined the art class and discovered the joy of painting. My color ID app on my smart phone helps me identify colors for my painting. I paint by imagination or images copied from reality.”
