Sharon has known Second Sense since the 1950s. It was before the ADA, and braille text books were not provided to students by the Catholic schools. At the time, one of Second Sense's (then the Catholic Guild for the Blind) main services was transcribing texts into braille. All by hand and all by volunteers.

"Once I started to read braille in first grade, I read anything I could put my hands on. My dad would pick up those many heavy boxes from the Guild. As soon as my textbooks arrived home, I started to read them," Sharon shared.

"Braille is an important part of my life and literacy, which is why I have spent so many years teaching it professionally, and now in retirement as a volunteer."

Sharon stayed connected to Second Sense when working as a counselor for the state. "I referred clients to Second Sense as I knew they would receive good help and service, as I had received it myself."

Sharon also continued to receive training – from computer instruction to orientation and mobility training – both when she was working and now that she is retired.

"After living in the same area for most of the last 40 years, I decided to move to River Forest. It is closer to my sons, daughters-in-law and grandkids. The first thing I wanted to learn was how to get to the Green Line to keep my teaching appointments and anything else I wanted to do downtown. It was not an easy route, but after a few lessons with Mandi, I learned it and continue to use it weekly. She also helped mark my stove and the washers/dryers in our common laundry room. Her help was terrific and always appreciated."

We shared Maggie's story in our recent mailing. As an expectant mom, she is excited and trying to be as prepared as she can be. As a woman with vision loss, Maggie has to learn ways she can independently use all the baby items she will need – from bottles to strollers – without vision.

To help with this, Maggie is working with Cody, one of our Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapists and the dad of a young daughter. They are trying out several tools that can help. And, Maggie is finding that technology can make a huge difference.

Her latest favorite gadget is a pair of sunglasses. These Ray-Ban's can sync with your phone and access Meta AI, a conversational assistant. By simply saying, "Hey Meta," Maggie can ask questions, make a phone call or send a text.

The sunglasses have a built in camera and speakers set at the temple-tip so only the wearer can hear the audio output.

Maggie had the perfect task to try out these sunglasses. She had a pile of baby clothes that she needed to go through and put into some kind of order, So, while wearing the sunglasses, she held each item up and asked what color and size it was. She then was able to organize the clothes by color and size. She put away the clothes that are a little too big and arranged the others for when her daughter comes home from the hospital later this month.

Being able to complete this seemingly simple task independently is so important. And you helped to make it possible.
