Comprehensive Computer Classes

You Can Learn to Use a Computer Independently with Vision Loss

If you are new to using a computer or new to using adaptive technology, our comprehensive computer classes are the perfect option for you.

Taught by a trained educational professional who uses the adaptive technology on a daily basis, these classes are practical and thorough. Our training environment is supportive and friendly, encouraging you to master the skills and become an independent user.

The curriculum includes four topic areas: Introduction to Windows and Adaptive Technology, MS Word, Internet and Email, and MS Excel. Classes meet for 3 hours, 2 or 3 times a week. Introduction to Windows

Prerequisites: Basic familiarity with the computer keyboard and the ability to type at a steady pace

This is a solid introduction to the Windows operating system using adaptive technology (either screen reader or screen magnification). You will learn the basic concepts to operate and use AT (adaptive technology).  We will also cover applications and file management,

Upon completion, you will be able to:

  • Understand basic PC concepts including history, hardware, software, etc
  • Turn the computer on and off
  • Locate the components of a PC (CPU, monitor, disk drive, etc.)
  • Access various components of the Windows® operating system’s main window (Desktop, Start Menu, Task Bar, etc.)
  • Customize settings in their AT and in Windows®
  • Use appropriate AT and Windows® hot keys
  • Run programs from the Desktop and the Start Menu
  • Navigate various types of dialog boxes
  • Set up hot keys to run programs
  • Use File Explorer to manage drives, folders and files

MS Word®

Prerequisites: Introduction to Windows or equivalent

You will learn to enter text, use various editing techniques, save files, format text and print documents.  We will also cover inserting page numbers and dates, creating tables and using the spell checker.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Open a document from the hard drive or removable drive
  • Read a document using the reading commands of their AT
  • Select, cut or copy, and paste text within a document or between documents
  • Use text formatting commands including Bold, Underline and Font
  • Spell check a document and correct mistakes
  • Search a document to find a word and replace it with a different word
  • Change the page margins
  • Add page numbers
  • Create Headers and Footers
  • Create a table

Internet and Email

Prerequisites: Introduction to Windows, MS Word® or equivalent

You will learn to navigate web pages, search the web, fill out online forms, and send and receive email using an online email account. Students finish the class having their own online email account.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Choose the ISP that is right for them
  • Go to a specific location on the World Wide Web
  • Read the information on a web page
  • Navigate a web page with multiple regions
  • Find the correct link to a specific location on a web page
  • Fill out a form on a web page
  • Use a search engine to find information on a specific topic
  • Navigate a web-based email account
  • Send and receive email
  • Forward or reply to an email
  • Attach a file to an email

MS Excel®

Prerequisites: Introduction to Windows, MS Word®, Internet and Email, or equivalent

You will learn to navigate a worksheet and workbook, edit or create a new worksheet and workbook, edit or create a formula, use the fill command to quickly enter data, and format data.  We will also cover printing, moving worksheets, and creating and using a template.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Define a worksheet and workbook
  • Open a workbook
  • Navigate a worksheet and workbook
  • Enter and edit data
  • Use AutoSum
  • Create and edit a formula
  • Format data
  • Use Fill to enter data
  • Insert or delete a cell, row, column or worksheet
  • Rename a worksheet
  • Move/Copy a worksheet
  • Hide a row or column
  • Print a worksheet/workbook
  • Use database features
