Second Sense - Beyond Vision Loss

Protecting Your Identity When Shopping Online

Wednesday, November 17 - 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

You may not think of this every time you shop online, but cyber criminals are lurking out there ready to empty your checking account or worse yet, steal your identity. Having your identity stolen can wreak havoc with your finances and is difficult to get resolved. Since so many of us are shopping on line for the sake of convenience or necessity, it is important to understand the risks and precautions you can take.

Eva Velasquez, CEO of Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC), joins us to help us learn how we can keep our identities safe while shopping online. ITRC is a nonprofit organization supporting victims of identity theft. ITRC also raises awareness about data breeches, cyber security scams and privacy issues. Ms. Velasquez can answer your questions concerning:

  • What is an online shopping scam? How can I tell if it is scam?
  • What are some signs my identity has been stolen?
  • What can I do if my identity has been stolen from shopping online?
  • What steps can I take to prevent identity theft when shopping online?
