When you are out traveling with your white cane or guide dog, there are times when you may need some assistance from a passerby. And then there are those times when you encounter the overly helpful stranger assuming you need assistance when you do not. Sometimes you may even sense danger from unwelcome advances. Knowing how to respond in different situations will empower you to take control of the situation and feel more confident about your independence.
We are excited to welcome Torriente Toliver from Mind Body Defense, a self-defense expert with over 15 years of teaching experience in the Martial Arts. Torriente joins us with three workshops focusing on different strategies for protecting yourself in a variety of scenarios. His workshops will give you tips for environmental awareness, effective communication and disengagement from unwelcome advances.
Situational Awareness: Evaluating the level of safety in any environment and choosing the appropriate response
Conflict Communication: De-escalating the dispute or threat
Grab Defense: Responding to a physical confrontation
These interactive workshops include discussion, role playing and some physical activity. Participation takes place at Second Sense, either in-person or you can listen in over our conference line. You can attend one workshop or all three. Participants who call in will be muted and in listen-only mode.
