Second Sense - Beyond Vision Loss

Advanced Orientation and Mobility: Clay Play at Heather McQueen Studio

Sunday, December 17 - 1:45 pm - 4:00 pm

Pottery is an excellent activity for enhancing orientation and mobility as it improves your spatial awareness and fine motor skills. The tactile nature of pottery allows you to rely on your sense of touch and proprioception rather than visual cues. This can foster a heightened awareness of your surroundings and a better understanding of spatial relationships.

Pottery also encourages creativity and cognitive flexibility as you learn to envision and create designs through touch. This process not only strengthens your ability to navigate and interact with the physical world, but also boosts confidence. Pottery can also be therapeutic, offering a sense of calm and focus, helping to further develop concentration and patience necessary for navigating new environments.

In our next Advanced Orientation and Mobility outing, you have the opportunity to experience working with clay at Heather McQueen Studio in Lincoln Park and learn how to create your own work of art!

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Choose to work in wet clay, using hand building or wheel-throwing methods.
  • Clay can be dusty and some materials can stain. Dress appropriately. Aprons and work towels are available to share.
  • You can finish your piece by adding color. (Please Note: Ceramics is a long process spanning several weeks. Heather has streamlined this process and will clear-coat and fire the work for you. In approximately three to four weeks, you’ll receive notice your piece is ready for pick up or shipment, if desired).

Time and Transportation details:

  • 1:45 pm: Meet at Heather McQueen’s studio, 831 W Wolfram St, Chicago, IL 60657.
  • 4:00 pm: Schedule your ride or pick up transportation.
