Second Sense - Beyond Vision Loss

Advanced Orientation and Mobility: A Deep Dive into Street Crossings

Saturday, July 20 - 10:00 am - 3:30 pm

Street crossings are one of the fundamental components of Orientation and Mobility. With the advancement of technology regarding traffic engineering in the last decade, some elements of street crossings may have changed.

While crossing the street may seem like a daunting and risky task, it can be broken down into several steps to make it easier to tackle. Within these steps there are many more details and techniques you can use at both familiar and unfamiliar intersections. This workshop will focus on the ability to generalize across all intersections rather than the intricate details of a specific one.

You will learn techniques for:

  • locating your crossing
  • analyzing your intersection
  • aligning properly
  • crossing when it is safe

During this deep dive into street crossings, there will be a Q&A and a practical break-out to use the knowledge you’ve learned during the session.
