WORKSHOPS

CORE COURSES

Core courses are those that cover the basic computer skills everyone should have.  Core courses typically meet for 3 hours, 2 or 3 times a week for one month.  They are taught along with the adaptive technology (AT) used by the student.  This includes JAWS for Windows®, Window-Eyes, ZoomText and MAGic. Introduction to Windows

Prerequisites: Basic familiarity with the computer keyboard and the ability to type at a steady pace

This course is a solid introduction to the Windows operating system.  It covers launching programs and managing files, as well as the basic concepts related to the operation and usage of AT (adaptive technology). 

Basic word processing is covered, including creating a new document, entering text and saving files.  A brief introduction to Internet Explorer is also provided.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Understand basic PC concepts including history, hardware, software, etc
  • Turn the computer on and off
  • Locate the components of a PC (CPU, monitor, disk drive, etc.)
  • Access various components of the Windows® operating system’s main window (Desktop, Start Menu, Task Bar, etc.)

Customize settings in their AT and in Windows®

  • Use appropriate AT and Windows® hot keys
  • Run programs from the Desktop and the Start Menu
  • Navigate various types of dialog boxes
  • Use MS Word® to write and edit basic documents
  • Save and retrieve documents using MS Word®
  • Set up hot keys to run programs
  • Use My Computer to manage drives, folders and files
  • Understand the basic concepts of the Internet

MS Word®

Prerequisites: Introduction to Windows or equivalent

This course covers the use of MS Word®.  Topics include entering text, using various editing techniques, saving files, formatting text and printing documents.  Other topics include inserting page numbers and dates, creating tables and using the spell checker.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
•     Open a document from the hard drive, floppy disk or removable drive
•     Read a document using the reading commands of their AT
•     Select, cut or copy, and paste text within a document or between documents
•     Use text formatting commands including Bold, Underline and Font
•     Spell check a document and correct mistakes
•     Search a document to find a word and replace it with a different word
•     Change the page margins
•     Add page numbers
•     Create Headers and Footers
•     Set tab stops
•     Print envelopes and labels
•     Create a table

Internet and Email

Prerequisites: Introduction to Windows, MS Word® or equivalent

This course covers navigating web pages, searching the web, filling out online forms, and sending and receiving email using Outlook Express®.  Using an online email account is also covered and participants finish the class having their own online email account.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
•     Choose the ISP that is right for them
•     Go to a specific location on the World Wide Web
•     Read the information on a web page
•     Navigate a web page with multiple frames
•     Find the correct link to a specific location on a web page
•     Fill out a form on a web page
•     Use a search engine to find information on a specific topic
•     Navigate a web-based email account
•     Use MS Outlook Express® to send and receive email
•     Use MS Outlook Express® to forward or reply to an email
•     Use MS Outlook Express® to attach a file to an email

MS Excel®

Prerequisites: Introduction to Windows, MS Word® Internet and Email, or equivalent

This course covers navigating a worksheet and workbook, editing or creating a new worksheet and workbook, editing or creating a formula, using the fill command to quickly enter data, and formatting data.  The course also covers printing, moving worksheets, and creating and using a template.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
•     Define a worksheet and workbook
•     Open a workbook
•     Navigate a worksheet and workbook
•     Enter and edit data
•     Use AutoSum
•     Create and edit a formula
•     Format data
•     Use Fill to enter data
•     Insert or delete a cell, row, column or worksheet
•     Rename a worksheet
•     Move/Copy a worksheet
•     Hide a row or column
•     Print a worksheet/workbook
•     Use database features

Elective courses are those courses which not everyone will need, but some people will find necessary for their goals.  Elective courses typically meet for 3 hours, 2 or 3 times a week for 2 weeks.

MS Outlook®

Prerequisites: Introduction to Windows, MS Word®, Internet and Email or equivalent

This course covers MS Outlook®.  Topics include using the calendar, managing contacts and tracking tasks.  Participants will also learn to read, send, reply to, and forward email.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
•     Go between the inbox and the list of folders
•     Open and read incoming email
•     Write and send an email
•     Reply, Reply to All, and Forward email
•     Go to the calendar and check for existing appointments
•     Create new appointments including recurring appointments
•     Find a contact
•     Create and edit contacts
•     Create, lookup and edit a task

MS PowerPoint®

Prerequisites: Introduction to Windows, MS Word®, Internet and Email or equivalent

This course covers MS PowerPoint®, including how to create and view a slideshow using various slide layouts, slide designs, transitions, animation and sound.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
•     Navigate the PowerPoint interface
•     Open, close and save slideshows
•     Choose a slide or slideshow design
•     Choose a slide layout
•     Navigate and change slide elements
•     Enter speaker notes
•     Reorder the position of slides within the slideshow
•     Add transition effects between slides
•     Use sound and animation in the slideshow Return to top

ONE-DAY COURSES

One day courses typically meet on a Saturday from 10:00 am until 2:30 pm.

Internet Explorer® Overview

Prerequisites: Basic skills with necessary adaptive technology

This is an overview of Internet Explorer®.  Topics include navigating web pages, searching the web and filling out online forms.  Features of Internet Explore including history, favorites and Internet Options will also be discussed.

MS Outlook® Overview

Prerequisites: Basic skills with necessary adaptive technology

This is an overview of MS Outlook®.  Topics include using the calendar, managing contacts and tracking tasks.  Participants will also learn to read, send, reply to, and forward email.

MS Excel® Overview

This course is an overview of MS Excel®.   Topics include navigating a worksheet and workbook, editing or creating a new worksheet and workbook, editing or creating a basic formula, using the fill command to quickly enter data, and formatting data. 

MS PowerPoint® Overview

Prerequisites: Basic skills with necessary adaptive technology

This course is an overview of MS PowerPoint® including how to create and view a slideshow using various slide layouts, slide designs, transitions, animation and sound.

Online Shopping with Peapod

Prerequisites: Basic skills with necessary adaptive technology

This course teaches you about using the Peapod online grocery store.  Topics include how to get to and navigate the Peapod web site, browse the aisles, place items in your grocery basket, search for products, look through previous orders and place an order.

Introduction to Notetaking Devices

Prerequisites: None

This workshop is an introduction to PDAs (Personal Data Assistant) and notetaking devices.  The devices used in the workshop will vary and may include the BrailleNote/VoiceNote, PacMate Omni and VoiceSense/BrailleSense.  We will cover the menu system, taking notes and managing files.  We will also discuss using the notetaker as a PDA.  Return to top

WORKSHOPS
